Do I Need A Casting Lesson ?
That is a great question. I often wonder how many anglers practice their casting skill set. If t?hey do, how often, and how long.
Questions I would ask salt water anglers
1) Have you ever had a lesson from a certified casting instructor? (dont let the certification be an issue, I beleive there are plenty of accomplished anglers that can teach)
2) If you have had a lesson, did you practice what the instructor suggested for improvement ?
3) If you have not taken a lesson, would you know what areas that you need work on ?
4) If you are prreparing for a guided saltwater trip on a skiff with a guide, are you able to execute an accurate salt water quiuck cast to forty feet or longer,
or make a back cast delivery between the one o’clock and three o’clock position?
5) Are you capable of controling slack after a salt water cast when you fly hits the target, and be ready to perform a strip set?
Questions I would ask fresh water anglers… ( 1,2 and 3 would be the same)
4) Are you able to mend your line to create a drag fee drift, both on the water, and with an airial mend?
5) Can you perform a pickup and laydown from your non dominant casting side?
6) Can you execute an accurate roll from dominat and non dominant casting sides.
7) Are you able to perform a pickup roll cast ?
8) If you are scheduled to do a guided drift boat trip, are you able to make one or two false cast and deliver the fly accuratley from your non dominant side ?
…….Perhaps you can ask yourself these questions and see what you come up with for answers. In regards to number question number one, although there are planty of people
that may be capable of teaching a beginner how to cast, one would have to ask if they are able to identify casting faults, and fix the root cause.
